The Internet is under attack?

5 undersea Internet cables snapped within a short time frame. Is the Internet under attack? The Internet, most of it, are connected with intercontinental cables submerge undersea.

Several undersea Internet cables in Asia that connects to Europe and the rest of the world snapped. India and part of the Middle East are suffering from Internet traffic slowdown.

Some sources mentioned of ship’s anchor being drag by a storm which might have cause it. It’s must be a huge storm if it can drag anchored ships from Egypt to India (is that even possible?). May be it wasn’t the same ship, several ships suddenly dropped anchor on Internet cables around the same week.

Five cables around the Middle East snapped, ok so one was powered down for some odd reason, it is still weird and a little bit fishy to me.

The truth is out there. But I’m too lazy to go out so I turn to the blogosphere in finding some answers. Yes there are many answers.

Some claimed that the cut was a cover for the NSA installing taps on the line using the U.S.S Jimmy Carter in order to track Internet data flowing in and out from the Middle East. They had done something like this before in the past.

Cablecuts

I Love Bonnie have the best round up on who the suspects are behind the undersea Internet cables cutting shenanigans. It could be big telcos organization trying to make some profit from re-routing. Or a pre-attack on Iran. A dialog line from the Star Wars movie echos.

“First step of invasion is interrupting all communication…”

John C. Dvorak thinks it is a ploy to disrupt Iranian commerce. It is a less known fact that Iran is planning to launch the Iranian Oil Bourse sometime around this week or so.

“A marketplace for oil, gas, and various petrochemicals, the Iranian Oil Bourse would trade exclusively in non-dollars and probably substantial negative impact to the U.S. economy and financial system. The bourse was scheduled for launch this week (between Feb. 1 and 11. With complete elimination of Internet connectivity to the country, this launch is now impossible and unlikely to be achievable before month’s end (given the estimate 10-14 days for repairs to fiber-optic cables).”

Remember what happen to the last country that refuse to trade oil using US dollars? It has a similar name to Iran, only that it ends with a ‘q’ instead of a ‘n’.

Big corporation mass media are busy covering the U.S. election. Iranian Oil Bourse didn’t get much coverage, and now with the disruption of Internet cables I doubt it will get any traction anytime soon.

Somehow I think it is not that simple. It could be a radio-active mutant monster wreaking havoc under the sea just waiting for a perfect time to terrorize a city. Something like the Cloverfield Monster.

Then again, the truth might be event more sinister. May be the Church of Scientology is behind all of this, cutting Internet access to the Internet group ‘Anonymous‘ stopping them from DDOSing their website. Or this is part of Anonymous plan to expel Scientology form the Internet.

Worst, it might even be Chuck Norris.

Most probably it’s a weird coincident. What are the odds of two network switches to fail at the same time? Not much, but it happens.
