Wishing for iPod Hi-Fi 2.0

Written by J Shamsul, Thursday, April 10, 2008 | 1

Ipod Hifi

Early 2006, Apple had announced a couple of iPod accessories products. One of it is the infamous iPod Hi-Fi. It is a speaker system developed, manufactured and sold by Apple Inc. It acts as a Hi-Fi quality sounding speaker for your iPod, and it did just that.

The product didn’t gain any traction, and was discontinued by the end of 2007. I would actually love to see a revamp version of iPod Hi-Fi. The new iPod Hi-Fi 2.0 would have some new features. Not talking about build-in FM tuner, alarm clock or anything mediocre like that. Here are two of my suggestions to the Apple engineering team for the next version of iPod Hi-Fi.

Ipodhifi 2
  1. Build in AirTunes

We see this feature on the AirPort Express where you could stream music form iTunes on a Mac via Wi-Fi to the AirPort Express connected to a Hi-Fi system. It would be nice if the iPod Hi-Fi has AirTunes build in and you now could stream music directly to the iPod Hi-Fi via Wi-Fi. It’s a Hi-Wi-Fi.

This would make the iPod Hi-Fi more appealing to non-iPod owners who just wants a good speaker to stream their music form their iTunes. This would also save me money as I don’t need to buy a AirPort Express and a Hi-Fi system. I don’t have any of them both at the moment.

  2. Charge and Sync iPod

Most iPod speakers will charge the iPod while it’s docking, but I’ve yet found one where you could sync you iPod with the iTunes on your Mac with it. Now only if you could sync your iPod wirelessly from your Mac to the iPod docking on the iPod Hi-Fi.

Apple has to do this Wi-Fi sync thing sooner or later. MacBook Air, lets just imagine that I actually could afford one, only has one USB port, you can’t sync your iPod while transferring photos from you digital camera. You could of cause do it one at a time, but that is just old fashion.

Apple likes to create scenarios, a little stories, in marketing their products. Here is a little scenario marketing pitch I have for iPod Hi-Fi 2.0;-

Imagine you with your iPod. You listen to your iPod while you commute back from work. You reach home, dock your iPod on the iPod Hi-Fi 2.0 sitting on a Ikea bookshelf at home and now you could continue listening to whatever you were listening, music or podcast, loud on the sound system that fills the room with rich, audiophile-quality sound.

While you were working on you Mac, there is a new song on your iTunes that you just bought from the iTunes Store. Stream it to your iPod Hi-Fi with AirTunes to listen to it.

Then when you go to bed, iTunes will sync your docked iPod on the iPod Hi-Fi 2.0 with the latest downloaded podcast shows. You are all set for tomorrow. Everything seamlessly.

Now if only anybody at Apple would drop by my blog and may be just consider the idea.

I am actually looking for a good speaker system that I can use with my iPod Touch. May be there are iPod accessories speakers that has similar functionality to what I just describe? Any suggestion?
