Rock on Rave: day one report

Rock on Rave

Rock on Rave event is the brainchild of iseekmusic entertainment. Aiming to be Malaysia’s first non-stop music festival. Two days, two stages, 32 bands and 3 electronica DJs. Held at Cineleisure Damansara rooftop, starts from 1pm till midnight, that’s almost 12 hours of non-stop music.

Rock on Rave, the two day even brings together some of the finest local indie acts.

Day one features Butterfingers, Republic of Brickfields, Komplot, Furniture, Telephony Delivery, Bunkface, Grape, The Other Side Orchestra, Para Avion, Second Combat, Avalon’s Whisper, Man Under Zero Effort, Scandel, 40 Winks and Deserters. Two electronica DJs, Twilight Action Girl and Shaheed Naz.

Day two will showcase bands from Oh Chentaku, Couple, Bittersweet, Lightcraft, Nao, Creamson, Funky Doryz, Cassandra, A New Fall, Dashown, They Will Kill Us All, Killeur, Calculateur, Restraint, Forsaken 41 and Prema Yin. Two electronica DJs are Twilight Action Girl and Unknown Device.

Rock on Rave promises two days of awesome non-stop genre busting music festival. The actual event however was far from what the impression I got after reading the fliers/posters.

This is ‘day one’ report. I was there at about 2:30PM, and the stage was still not setup. There were some rain, which may have been the cause of the delay. Not until 3:30PM / 3:45PM or so that the event kick off.

I see only one stage, not two. Each bands took forever to prepare due to technical issues and such. During the night the lighting wasn’t setup properly. If this was the organizer’s first time doing such event, it really shows. You can’t blame the bad weather, you should prepared for the worst.

However, all is forgiven when Butterfingers took the stage. They got all the respect from the crowd and their peers. They were among the earliest band in the local indie scene as I could remember. I still listen to ‘The Chemistry (between us)’ from time to time. It’s good that they played their old song. The crowd really enjoys it.

I didn’t pay much attention to some of the earlier bands, checking out the merchandises sold.

Then Avalon’s Whisper caught my attention. This is my first time listening to them, pretty hardcore.

Man Under Zero Effort plays awesome instrumental, watch out for their EP. To bad while they were playing it starts to pour heavily. Crowd runs for cover.

Since the organizer decide to stop the event until weather calms down, I when out to get some food. When I got back, things get better. Telephony Delivery delivered an awesome performance. The Other Side Orchestra rocked, I bought their album. Grape kickass all the way. Republic of Brickfields another old school band, brings reggae and rock for the crowd to enjoy. Finally Komplot, ‘Disko tanpa Risiko‘ indeed.

I’ve to say, all bands were at their best despite of technical issues and bad weather they were facing. Rina of 8TV also is a great MC, as she rigorously trying to keep the crowd entertain.

Rock on Rave is not the only big event in town. Over at Sunway Lagoon Seventeen magazine is having their Roxy Summer Splash, featuring some of the more establish bands like Pop Shuvit and Estrella.

Well those who wants to checkout chicks are at Sunway, those who want to checkout bands are at Cineleisure rooftop.

I am hoping the weather will be a little bit more friendly on tomorrow’s Rock on Rave, day two.
