KAMI is a local TV mini series that made its debut on 8TV sometime ago and was re-aired recently. It has now gain a small but fast growing cult following among young local teens.
The first thing that got me watching this mini series was the music. My brother caught the series trailer on 8TV, he then record it on his phone and showed it to me. It has this cool wacky music track, it was Meet Uncle Hussain’s La La La Kerja Lah.
That was enough to grab my interest to watch the show.
The first episode blows my mind away and got me hooked for the rest of the show. When it comes to local Malay TV series, I’m not much of a fan. You can expect the same thing again and again.
KAMI on the other hand feels fresh and doesn’t feel like most of the typical local Malay drama series. I’ve to say that I am quite impress with how the series was written.
KAMI Series Recap
The story revolve around five secondary school student, Lyn, Ali, Abu, Adii and Sofie, each with their own secrets and their own personal demons to face and as the events unfold they found each other. I like how it starts by following one character at a time and as the series progresses everything comes together.

The series starts with Lyn, a very smart, independent and streetwise small town girl. She comes from a poor small town family, she and her mother.
She dreams of becoming a writer, a journalist and wants to travel around the world. She writes her own fanzine called KAMI under the pseudonym Teka Teki.
She makes extra pocket money by selling her fanzine and her school homework to kids at school for them to copy.
Apparently the money wasn’t enough. She needs the money to replace her old computer, she’s doing all her writing on it. She then unwittingly gets herself embroiled with a small time drug-dealer named Boy, doing earns and drug runs for him for some extra cash. Things got bad and when her mother found out, the mother makes the decision to move the family to the big city, K.L.
There in the big city, she meet with other like minded people and befriends them. Just like her, they to have secrets they keep from each other. Each has their inner demons.
Ali is a huge fan of the fanzine KAMI but never knows that Lyn was actually ‘Teka Teki‘ the writer. Ali dreams of making and performing his own music but finds himself having to cope with his parants’ crumbling marriage due to his father’s failing business. To make things worst, Ali have a history of drug abuse.
Ali’s parents had to pull Ali out from private school and into a public school. This is where he meet Abu. Both of them starts out hating each other’s guts but then end up to be best friends.
Abu also has his set of personal problem. His tragic past leads him into a self-destructive cycle. He starts from petty theft to fights and other juvenile activity.
Adii which is Ali’s cousin is the glue that keeps the group together. She might just be the one in the group with the less trouble. She introduces Sofie to the gang and becomes part of the group.
Sofie portray herself more of a airhead but is actually really smart. The reason probably due to her having to go through her mother’s two fail marriages and with her mother constantly attempts to groom her into becoming the perfect trophy wife.

As series of events unfolds in the TV series, the bond between them gets stronger. The love of music keeps them together. You’ll often see them going to underground gigs, with actual indie bands performing in the show. I’ve never thought that one day I would see One Buck Short on TV, but there they was, in one of the episode, performing.
KAMI the movie
Seriously though, the TV series is nothing but a series of teasers for the upcoming Movie. It is to prepare us for the movie.
The movie will pick up where the series left us. The gang just finished their SPM exams marking the end of high school. It’s now time for some harmless teenage fun.
However one’s dark past catches up. The small time drug dealer Boy finds Lyn. They had some unfinished business. The whole group become involves in this and among other things. As the two worlds collide, a chain of events forced them to face their personal demons.
