Went to watch KAMI the movie during the first day of Raya. After all the boring Raya usual ritual stuff in the morning I went straight to Cineleisure Damansara. Interesting to see everyone with their pretty baju Raya at the movies.

I wanted to write this sooner, but life has other plans for me, and I had to launch MakanByte a food blog. Anyhow, this is my take on the movie.

It was well written and all that I had expected it to be. It was good but not great. I wont be going too detail as I do not want to reveal spoilers for those who haven’t yet watch the movie. And I do recommend you watch this.

Kami 3

I like KAMI because it portrays an aspect of K.L. life that I have not seen being done on the sliver screen like this before. The talent they use fits in with the storyline. And if you enjoy the indie music scene, you’ll enjoy the soundtrack.

For those who enjoyed the TV series, they’ll enjoy the movie a lot. For those who have not watch a single episode of the TV series, you will catch up on what’s going on eventually. Although I would suggest you read the short recap I had written on my previous post.

I judge a movie, whether it’s good or bad by how many memorable scenes I can recall right after I leave the cinema. KAMI has some truly epic scenes that sticks with you. I feel that some scenes has hidden meaning behind it.

There are certain part of the movie I feel it was kind of draggy. It is possible to have five or more parallel sub plots going at the same time frame in the TV series, you can easily split it up. For the movie, it is not that easy.

However, they manage to get the main plot going and all the sub plots filling the gap. Just when you think things are not going anywhere in the movie, it makes a 180 degrees turn. Everything comes together in the end.

One other thing, the mother-fish-cracker censorship board did a good job in censoring some words from the movie. Nothing gets pass them I guess.

Images for this post I had shamelessly stole from Tontonfilem blog. Check it out (blog post is written in Malay) for a more in-depth review of KAMI.

Is KAMI a ground breaking movie for Malaysian film industry? not quite, but it’s damn close enough to be one.
