There are now quite a number of local indie bands and artists featured on Jiboneus. I don’t write just about any band that I came across, just only the ones that I like.

Normally I don’t write about bands that I have not yet been to any of their performances and also bands that has not release any official albums, or EPs.

However, I have to make exception for this band known as Selamat Pagi Gadis. I had never seen them perform live, and yet I like them enough to be featured on Jiboneus.

Selamat Pagi Gadis

Someone told me to check out this new band on MySpace. Once at Selamat Pagi Gadis MySpace page, I was instantly hooked with all three songs they had offered.

Then, when I heard that they are selling their EPs, I just had to get one. Yes I do buy EPs and album even-though I probably could download it from the Internet. Got their EP/single, ‘Waktu Indah Dahulu’ at the recent KAMI gig.

Selamat Pagi Gadis is made up of, Tatyana on vocals, Nabil on lead guitar, Apit on rhythm guitar, Ali on bass and Azizi on drums. According to the little story on their MySpace page, all of them meet on cyberspace and had only interacted with each other online before the band was formed.

There are three songs on their EP/single, Waktu Indah Dahulu, Bicara and Penahan Elektro. When I first heard them, instantly I was fixated to the powerful vocal and the raw guitar riffs. Unlike your everyday screamo-shout-fest punk band, Selamat Pagi Gadis showed some serious attitude without the shouting. It’s all good.

However, on Penahan Elektro, the English part of the song, felt awkward at first, but later starts to grow on me after few plays. Just like when I first heard Meet Uncle Hussain’s English song, Milk In the Bottle or just like when I first heard Butterfingers singing in Malay (Selamat Tingal Dunia).

Each band member with their own different type of influences makes a perfect fusion in Selamat Pagi Gadis. You can feel little of grunge, a little of punk, a wholesome mix of genre.

As mentioned on their MySpace page, Post-punk, Alternatives, Garage, Indie, make up the word PAGI.

Tracks from the released EP/single, sounds a little bit rough and not quite perfect, but still manages to be among the most played songs on my iTunes. I believe that they will get better and when it’s time for them to release a full album, they are going to kick some serious ass.

Selamat Pagi Gadis Single

Here are two tracks from their single release. Visit their MySpace page or get their EP/Single (if it’s still available) to listen to them more.

Selamat Pagi Gadis (SPG) is the band to watch for, and when you start to hear them everywhere, just remember you heard it first here at Jiboneus.com.
