Hujan the Chosen One

Written by J Shamsul, Monday, August 17, 2009 | 0

Earlier this year I wrote about the Band Hujan, how they going to be too big for the mainstream to just ignore. Few months later, you see them on Channel V as the chosen one this month. Well one of the Chosen One, as Channel V celebrates CelebrASIAN, honoring three indie bands from this region. Two other bands among Hujan are Singapore’s Electrico and Indonesia’s Alexa.

Back then Hujan were the indie darlings and now they are sharing the stage with the big boys. Their rise to fame in a short amount of time has been the envy of others.

During my last write up of this band, I compared their sound as to The Strokes. True enough as The Stokes are one of their influences but it is not their only influences. Listen carefully to Hujan’s first album you will here some Jazzy felling to it. Some even say they sound similar to Japanese bands. What Hujan did was to mix Malay lyrics with international sound. In which they did pretty well.

During an interview on Channel V, we got some insights on why the band name is Hujan. The word ‘hujan’ directly translate to English as ‘rain’. There are different types of rain – heavy rain, stormy rain, slow rain, romantic rain. This reflect to the band’s sound. Listening to their album you will notice some songs are fast and heavy – Jiwa Kelajuan and Luka Mana for example, some are slow ballads – Rantai Rasa and Pijak Hatiku for example.

This wide range of sound is good as it does not pigeonholed the band into just one small sub genre. I do hope that this is just the beginning, and there are more to come from this band.

Again, congratulation Hujan for being Channel V’s Chosen One. Check out this two music video from Hujan which will be in heavy rotation on Channel V.
