Flash Mob, iPhone and Maxis

Written by J Shamsul, Thursday, August 20, 2009 | 8

Flash mob began as a form of performance art. Large group of people assemble suddenly in a public place. They then perform an unusual action for a brief time – screams, applause, jump – then immediately disperse, leaving the unsuspected daze wondering what just happened.

Flash mobs are usually organized virally through emails, social media and SMS. Nothing official and through word of mouth, a friend of a friend of a friend. Flash Mod are not political in nature.

During the recent Maxis iPhone roadshow at KLCC, a small flash mob was organize. It claim to be Kuala Lumpur’s first major dance flash mob. It starts out as a stage dance performance, then suddenly part of the crowd starts dancing in sync with the dancers. Look at the unsuspected faces wondering what was going on. Check out the embedded video.

Flash mod are usually done independently as a performance art, not sure if one organized by PR companies as a publicity stunts counted as a flash mod. Not sure if this particular were designed as a publicity stunts for Maxis or just a flash mod planed at the iPhone roadshow.

You got a point there. Flash Mob or just Astroturfing? I’m not sure if this is organized by a PR company or not.

I just stumbled on the Video.

i was one of the organisers. and no, we are not a pr company. we deal in the performing arts.

this was by the dance community in malaysia. we approached maxis for the platform since it is impossible to get a dance flash mob (not just freezing) anywhere in malaysia. i mean, in a country where even five people get together and you need a permit or it’ll be an illegal gathering?

LOL!

so it wasn’t exactly viral, but this was an introduction to dance flash mobs as the dance community wants to be heard. thank you so much for the link up – because you just gave us another voice when people see this. cheers.

PS – our small group was about 110 plus in size. there were also members of the public who followed us.

a bold claim, but we’re the largest so far when it comes to dance flash mobs in malaysia. and it’ll keep getting bigger. our ultimate aim is 1000 dancers for a major record.

Hey klubbkidd, glad that you clear it up. The word ‘official’ and ‘Maxis’ makes me think that it’s some sort of publicity stunts for Maxis, hehe sorry.

Do let us know when there is another dance flash mobs ya!
