Second film from the 15Malaysia project is Chocolate, directed by the beloved late Yasmin Ahmad. This 3 minutes short film has Yasmin Ahmad written all over it. There is nothing new in this film, if you had seen a Yasmin Ahmad film or advertisements, you have seen it all. However what amazes me is the conversation that occurs around it.
Reading through the comments, (it’s now over 600 entries), I notice that almost each person take it differently. There are layers and layers in this shorts.
Some are talking about the inequalities between the non-bumiputra and the bumiputra. Some are referring to the fact that the young ones has no issues with race and it’s the older generation that pollutes the mind of the young with racial issues. Some also notice that, just because of 5 cent, the boy losses a chance for a friendship. Whatever it is, there is something for everybody.
The short was design in a way that it lets people talk about it. In a way it is about everything and yet at the same time it could be nothing at all. Check out the embedded video or go to 15Malaysian.com to download a copy.
Also check out the making of Chocolate. This might just be the last time we see Yasmin Ahmad in action.
