Duit Kecil portrays a typical occurrence in business transactions here in Malaysia. Seems to me that business owners are always out of small change, forcing me as the customer to figure out how to solve the issue. It usually ends up me buying something extra or just let them keep the change.
‘Duit Kecil’ translates to ’small change’. It is one of 15Malaysia short film, this time it’s directed by Johan John and stars Nam Ron, which himself is another Malaysian filmmaker to watch out for.
The film takes place in a sleazy cheap brothel. A guy looking at the merchandise and wanting some good time. When it’s time to pay up he finds himself without small change.
He then gather the rest of the girls at the brothel in order to find some small change. It then escalates into many arguments about problems faced by the Malaysian common man. From Malaysia’s not-up-to-par public transportion service to the economic climate.
Interestingly, this is not the first time I heard of such arguments. No I’m not saying that I’ve been to any brothel lately, just that the same arguments at that brothel in this film is the same arguments I hear people talking at coffee shops, mamak stalls, at the office water cooler, at the clinic while waiting for your turn to see the doctor and many other places. Now what does that tells you?
