30 Mosques in 30 Days at NYC

Written by J Shamsul, Thursday, September 17, 2009 | 0

30 Mosques in 30 Days is a lovely Tumblr blog of Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq’s Ramandan journey through New York City’s Muslim Community. During the fasting month for muslims, 30 days, Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq decides to break their fast at 30 mosques around NYC and blogged about it.

Reading the whole blog gives you a glimpse in how muslims in U.S., in this case New York City, live their lives. The blog is written in both adorable and heartwarming way. I love seeing the photographs on each post.

They also dove into the history of the mosques and the community around it. I learned that in the heart of Harlem, there is a mosque that has it’s sidewalk, under its jurisdiction painted green. This is so that people knew not to drug deal, fight or loiter in that area.

Don’t expect to see majestic huge mosques with large beautiful domes and other wonderful architectural design, as seen in most muslim countries, the mosques in NYC are more down to earth and humble. Even thought that is so, yet you can see through the photos and blog post that there is a strong sense of community in each and every mosques.

This puts it into perspective. Over here in Malaysia, Islam is the dominant religion and there is no problem being a muslim in this country, we have huge wonderful mosques, but lack in the sense of community.

Over there where Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq are living, NYC, Islam is the underdog religion, although the mosques are not huge yet there is a strong sense of community. With the misconceptions of Islam over there, I have the impression that live as a muslim there is somewhat difficult. However after reading the blog they make it seem easy.
