Lollipop no doubt is the most disturbing short film from 15Malaysia. It’s directed by Nam Ron, an accomplished theatre and film actor and also a passionate filmmaker. His independently funded feature length digital film ‘Gadoh‘ is his most recent success.
Lollipop is disturbing not because it’s bad short film, disturbing might just be the intended response. It stars Bront Palare as someone who had a dark past, abused by his dad which then turns him into a pedophile.
As politicians in our country fights for the people, human rights, corruptions, justice and what not, we seem to forget a subset of the rakyat (the people) the group of the rakyat that can’t vote, cant voice out but yet they are our future.
Our nation was shocked when the news of Nurin Jazlin an 8 year old girl reported missing broke out. The nation then was devastated when the news of Nurin’s death and the brutal murder. Anger and disbelief was everybody’s reactions to the news. To make matter worst, just as the nation was recovering from Nurin’s case, Sharlinie another missing children case broke. Sharlinie is still missing. This sort of thing don’t happen over here.
Lollipop reminds me of that time, a time the haunts our nation, a time our nations would want to forget. Lollipop is a haunting portrayal of a pedophile preparing to hunt, interspersed with metaphors on the state of Malaysia politics.
