Rock The World 9 is somewhat of a disappointment for me. Maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s the venue, maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s the combination of all. However we did stay for some part of it.

First of all, I didn’t take my own advice on my previous post about the dos and don’ts. I went knowing well enough KL’s weather is going to rain, and yet I didn’t pack any umbrella or rain coats.
We came to the event late, about 3:30 p.m. The event starts at noon. I didn’t bought any pre-sale tickets. As I was lining up getting our tickets, it starts to drizzle. And soon it pours while myself and several others are still lining up for tickets.
I decide to toughen up and sit through the rain with others there for the tickets. The ticketing counter lady starts counting soaking wet bank notes one after another. Giggling at our demise. It’s ok, it’s all in the name of Rock. Well that’s the vide from everybody there soaking wet.
Needless to say, might be because of the rain I was feeling a bit under the weather the day after Rock The World 9. So is it all worth it? Not really, read on.

When I got the tickets, the event organizer decides to take a break. I understand that speakers, amp and other stage equipment does not go well with water, in this case rain drops.
We waited to what felt like hours and hours. We keep ourself entertained by watching people speed eat oranges in TM Net’s booth to win a chance to see their favorite bands backstage. Yes that’s how bored we are.
After awhile the show continues with MonoloQue, which is Loque’s breakaway-trying-something-different band from Butterfingers. Their ‘guitar rosak’ and ‘radio rosak’ tunes are not for everyone, but they do have their fans. Fans who jump and shout in soaking wet rain. You can see umbrella everywhere.
The Times was next but it was too wet for me. This rain however did benefited the organizer, I bought a Rock The World 9 T-Shirt because I wanted to change to a drier cloth.

We went away for awhile and come back later. Then on the Chill Out stage there was this three guys playing with old school Game Boys. They are making 8-bit music that sounds like it’s coming from a broken Game Boy game. It was different, it was cool in away. Not something you see often in a rock concert.
We skip the Main stage and hang out at the Indie stage and Chill Out stage instead. So we miss all the Yuna, One Buck Short, Seven Collar T-Shirt, Bittersweet, all established well known acts. We decide to check out what the other two stage has to offer, and we were not disappointed.

We got to check out Y2K and their mask bandits. Although the crowd isn’t as massive as the main stage, but it was a good crowd.

Right after Y2K, it was Joanna & Co. Joanna acting all sexy and what not keeps the crowd wanting more. Drives them crazy with the little butt shaking dance by Joanna.

Up next was a power packed performance from The Otherside Orchestra. The energetic danceable electro funk rock ‘n’ roll band didn’t disappoint the fans.

Next we went to the Chill Out stage to check out the sweet Liyana Fizi, the final act for the Chill Out stage. Estralla is no longer around, but Liyana is still performing, and Estralla fans still has Liyana.
With babes like Joanna, Izwin (of The Otherside Orchestra) and Liyana, who needs Yuna. Well she was playing on the Main stage to what looks like a massive crowd, so we though we check out other babes.

After Liyana we went back to the Indie Stage for Couple. By the looks of it, Couple manages to draw in crowds away from the main stage to the Indie Stage. They played something new, something old, all crowd favorites power pop tunes.
Every band were only given a short time slot. Some bands takes 15 to 20 minutes to set up, only to play a 8 to 10 minutes set. It’s like they rushed to perform. Most of them were only given the chance to play 3 songs some just 2 songs. Looks like the organizer booked a lot of bands and then cramped all of them in a short time frame.
The venue to me feels small. Maybe it’s the stage positions, somehow it does not feel grand or epic in scale. I was at KAMI the gig last year, which was at the same place the same parking lot, the free gig feels much bigger then Rock The World 9.
Maybe it was just me, maybe I’m getting too old for this, because somewhere out there amongst the crowd, there is a kid who just scored straight As in SPM, saved his money to get there and for the tickets, went to his first Rock The World with all his friends watching his favorite bands on stage. That day, might just be the best damn day of his life. And maybe deep down, he said to himself, one day I too would perform at Rock The World.

I blame the rain.
Being wet and tired does not help you rockin hard.
