Experts suggest that demand for water in Palestine, Jordan and Israel will exceed supply by the year 2040. The Good Water Neighbors Project brings together youth in this region to learn about new ways to address this burgeoning water crisis. Established by EcoPeace / Friends of the Earth Middle East, the project aims to raise awareness of shared water problem of the Palestinians, Jordanians and Israelis.
This Current’s Colective Journalism video, Green Mideast Peace, documents the recent projects done by Good Water Neighbors Project. Youth from both sides of the border get together to build constructed wetlands, an artificial marsh or swamp which acts as a bio-filter to purify waste waters to be used for irrigation.
There the youths learned the technique of creating wetlands in which they could then create in their own village. Watch the video, it may take some time to load :-
What’s interesting on the video is that you could see Jordanians and Palestinians youth working along side Israelis youths in this project. Watch the interview in the video where the interviewer asked them about their new friends from across the borders.
“It’s both beautiful and strange feeling, because they are… I don’t want to say enemies, because they are lovely here.” – answered a Jordanian teenager.
“No. I don’t think of them as enemies. I think of them as neighbors,… neighbors which we don’t get along with.” answered a Israelis teenager.
The funny thing about the human sprit is that when in time of crisis, and when we have a common enemy, we will come together regardless of race and religion. However when there is no crisis, we turned against each other. Why is that?
