Surf’s Up Ipoh recap

Not sure how, but I made it to Ipoh for Surf’s Up. This was a few months ago, but still fresh on my mind, well some parts of it are. I’ve meant to write about this but got caught up with other things.

There were a lot of bands playing that day at Silveritage Hall, Medan Gopeng. Some are new, some have been around for some time. some are forgettable, some are memorable. From indie pop to hardcore heavy metal, to psychedelic space sounds.

There were a few bands that caught my attention, and two of them comes from Cyberjaya – Sforzando! and Hello, is this the band? – both are Multimedia University students. They were among the early bands playing that day. It pays to come early sometime.

Sforzando! first caught my attention was on a previous show in KLPac which featured post-rock / experimental-rock bands. They played a good blend of emo and post-rock stuff, but they are sticking the just rock n’ roll genre. We had the chance to do a short interview with them, and it’s coming up. I promise.

Hello? Is This The Band has an unusual name for a band, but it’s catchy and it sticks in your head. They play pop-punk-ish sound with Paramore as one of their influences. Fun and catchy. We also had the chance to do a short interview with them, this too is coming up, soon.

Space Gambus Experiment was one of the reasons why I was there in Ipoh. I’ve somehow manage to miss out on every single of their performances in Kuala Lumpur.

Space Gambus is not your typical band. I don’t think they wanted to be called a band. Founded by Kamal Sabran and Zulkifli Ramli, Space Gambus Experiment is a collective collaborations. Depending on the event they are playing, Space Gambus’ performances will incorporate musicians, poets, visual artist and other creative artists of other field.

Even before they start I was in awe just looking at their equipment. The crowd wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but then I notice that everyone starts to get closer and closer as they start playing. Space Gambus Experiment is not something you could mosh to, still they manage engage the crowds.

Space Gambus deserves a post on it’s on here on Jiboneus, which I will, soon.

Tabaraka played for the first time since almost 10 years hiatus. A long awaited reunion for their fans. It was a wild show, I thought I saw people flying from all direction crowd surfing. One this is for sure, they are back in the Malaysian hardcore scene. Catch their second show at Surf’s Up 2010 KL, happening this weekend.
