KAMI the gig at Bukit Jalil last saturday was a good mix of new and old bands. A super gig with over 20 of the best local acts performing to a large crowd in the middle of the Bukit Jalil Stadium carpark. Over 10 hours of non-stop indie music.

The event was split up into three sessions noon, evening and night. I was late, didn’t make it for the early session. Miss out on some great bands like Estrella and Couple but thats alright since I’ve been to many of their gigs.

I was however disappointed for missing out on bands like Harmacy, Laila’s Lounge and Plague of Happiness. It is not that often that these bands play here in K.L.

I manage to catch They Will Kill Us All when I reach Bukit Jalil. Fans are crowd surfing everywhere you turn to look. Setting up the phase for the rest of the event. They Will Kill Us All is a band to watch for and they need to finished and release their album sometime soon.

The crowd are mostly young teens coming from being fans of KAMI the series and the movie. It’s good to see some old school bands like Koffin Kanser and The Pilgrims rocking to this young crowd. For some of them, this might be their first time watching these bands perform.

Dragon Red almost lost one of its members. One of them fell from the stage during the first few seconds into their first song. I didn’t really quite catch what happen, all I saw was him, down, hugging the stage front monitor speaker an then fell from the stage, bringing down with him the monitor.

The band stops at first and then continue without him. I saw securities and a few stage crew coming to his aid. Worried band members tries to peak down the stage to see how he was doing. He was back for the second song and Dragon Red now are at full force screamo fest.

Pop Shuvit starts as usual with Moots and his loud-hailer. The sirens from the hailer acts as a warning to either get out of there, or prepare yourself for non-stop mosh pits.

I am not that much into reggae bands, but Pure Vibracion looked really cool. With its lead singer weaving the band’s flag, I feel like I was in some political rally, or some latin revolution lead by Che Guevara or something.

One Buck Short has been around in the scene for quite some time. Glad to see that they now have a very strong and fast growing fan base. Most people there actually knows the lyric to their songs and sings along.

One Buck Short is a great band to see live. They always look as if they are just having fun jamming with each other more then performing.

Next was Bittersweet, the band everybody is waiting for. This local British band from Ipoh has the coolness factor that put them in a class of their own.

The gap between the stage and the the fence that separates the crowd was full with people. It seem that everybody from the backstage are now in front to watch Bittersweet perform.

I think it’s very cool for them to invite the crowd for a sing along to a Raya song. Your typical Raya song but Bittersweet’s style. This is my first time seeing people moshing to a Raya song. Yes mosh pit in a Raya song.

In the middle of all the mosh pit havoc some of them were shaking hands and wishing Selamat Hari Raya. Well it is the Raya season after all.

Meet Uncle Hussain, yet another band the crowd is waiting for. Thanks to KAMI, two of their song ‘Lagu Untukmu’ and ‘La La La Kerja la’ had both become an instant hit when it was chosen to be the opening song for KAMI TV series.

They didn’t disappoint the crowd. A power pack performance. However I think they were told by the organizer to cut it short as time was running late.

Both Bittersweet and Meet Uncle Hussain are new phenomenal bands with their recent rise to fame. However it is time now for indie legends, as Butterfingers takes the stage. Loque was missing from the line up.

I didn’t expect them to play their old tunes, I’m glad that they did. We were rocking with hits from 1.2 Miligrams, Butter Worth Pushful and who can forget their epic track, Chemistry.

Emmett tries to break his guitar, but somehow the guitar fights back. He got a scratch on his side forehead. Ignoring the blood on his forehead, he continues to play Chemistry (Between Us). It was an epic scene.

OAG was to play next. The last band for the event. However it is already late. The event was suppose to end at 11:00, but it is now past 12:00 and OAG still haven’t played.

The stage was dark. Crowds cheered when they saw Radhi and the band setting up on the stage. Then some big dude organizer speaks through the mic, saying that OAG is not able to perform due to the time constraints. The crowd response with a huge ‘boo’.

I thought it was just a gimmick, until I realize that the event was supposed to end an hour ago.

I saw Radhi discussing with the organizer on the side of the stage. The crowd start to chant, “O.A.G! O.A.G! O.A.G!”. The stage is still dark.

Then they come out, the organizer dude speaks through the mic, saying that OAG are able to play only one song and everybody have to leave after that.

Everybody are now wondering what song will OAG perform. The crowd then went wild when they hear, “TV….”. If Butterfingers got to play Chemistry then OAG just had to play 60′s TV.

It was the longest version of 60′s TV. “Epic” isn’t the right, word but it’s the first word that comes to mind.

You can see the disappointment in Radhi and the rest of the band as they end 60′s TV. The big organizer dude then takes the microphone from Radhi and thanked everyone from coming. I don’t think Radhi was even given the opportunity to even say thank you.

“Hidup ini memang palat, tapi esok masih ada.”

Eight years ago nobody cares who uncle Hussain was. Now everybody wants to Meet Uncle Hussain. Undoubtably one of Malaysia’s top rising acts in the local indie scene, Meet Uncle Hussain consist of Lan on vocals and guitar, Taja on guitar, Afatt on Bass and Kudux on drums.

Meet Uncle Hussain themselves are not new to the indie scene, but had recently hitched a ride on the fame train. Their big break happened when two of their songs were picked up to be featured in a hit teen TV series, K.A.M.I.

Meet Uncle Hussain is one of those bands that sounds good in recording, but sounds even better when performing live. You can see that clearly this band enjoys performing live.

The name ‘Meet Uncle Hussain’ is a peculiar name for a rock band, but they are not your ordinary indie rock band either. Most of their songs they sing in Malay, but this band refuse to be pigeonholed into becoming one of the local malay rock bands who sings sappy rock ballads.

Meet Uncle Hussain is not sappy at all. Listening to their songs, I can say that they draw influences from upbeat bands like Franz Ferdinand to The White Stripes and mellower sounds from bands like Radiohead. Their sounds are advance, radio friendly and very hard to dislike. No wonder the mainstream pick them up very fast.

Each time when asked, who is ‘Uncle Hussian’, the band replied with a different answer. Their answer ranges from an actual uncle that’s very close to the band, or wanting to sound uniquely local, and I’ve even read on a magazine that says it’s a tribute to Malaysia’s third Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn who was granted the soubriquet Bapa Perpaduan (Father of Unity). Whatever it is, the name is catchy and unique which represent the sound of the band.

These are two songs picked up from the K.A.M.I soundtrack that start it all for this band.

(Lagu Untukmu)

(La La La Kerjalah)

Grab their first EP, ‘7 tahun 3 bulan 90 hari‘ at their shows. Check out their MySpace page for more of their music.

Last Saturday music lovers gathered at the Polo Pavilion Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort for a 12 hours of fun filled music festival. Sunburst KL 08 Music Festival featured over 26 artists span over 4 stages, 2 each side of the field and both of them are running simultaneously.

As one stage is playing the other stage gets ready for the next performance, 12 hours of non-stop music fun.

Even-though it start to rain, and it rains quite heavy in the middle of the show but people are still rocking hand having fun in the rain. Watching Hujan in the rain was awesome, talk about the irony.

There are also mini events such as games, guys playing with fire, drum playing and more. Tons of food to choose from. It’s all around fun.

It’s great to see awesome local indie bands like Hujan, Meet Uncle Hussain, One Buck Shot, Bittersweet and many more sharing the same event, and stage with international acts from Incognito, The Roots, John Legend and Incubus.

My camera ran out of battery when John Legend was just about to get on the stage. Thats a bummer. Check out my Flickr photostream for more photos of the event.

My plan to tweet, update my tumblelog and cover the whole thing fails as I was having too much fun did update as much as I plan to.
